Battle of Cheriton Walk, Hampshire

I revisited this walk as part of Walk 100K in March for Group B Strep Support, the charity supporting parents like ourselves with a newborn infected with Group B Streptococcus.

We first discovered there was a Battle of Cheriton Walk when we got our now 20 year old daughter’s off-road buggy in 2021.  Downloadable routes with historical information are available from The Hinton Arms pub , Visit Winchester, and Hinton Ampner National Trust or open my 9.85km/6.1km OS Maps route in a new window.

The walk is mostly on grass tracks, plus a few sections on quiet country lanes. An off-road wheelchair buggy is required.

There is a shorter 6.7km/4.1 mile walk if you turn left/west down Upper Lamborough Lane after point 5 and rejoin the walk at point 8. You can make it even shorter if you don’t bother with the diversions down point 2 and Sunken Lane. Open shorter OS Maps route in new window

Both The Hinton Arms & Visit Winchester maps start the walk from the car park of The Hinton Arms, which is probably best unless you are a member of the National Trust. But both these routes tell you to walk right out of the pub car park and walk along the grass verge beside the busy A272.  I do not recommend this with a wheelchair, and instead suggest you cross the A272 to the footpath on the northern side of the A272, and turn left towards New Cheriton.  At the crossroads turn north along the quiet B3046 until a bend in the road and a footpath heading due north (point 10 on the Hinton Arms/Visit Winchester maps), then turn right along the track to point 3, and then down to start to effectively start the walk in chronological order.  At point 4, turn left and walk round the edge of the field to safe you having to walk along a short section of the A272.
