Buriton to South Harting, South Downs Way

After the gentle section of the South Downs Way from The Sustainability Centre to Butser Hill, and along Harting Down (see previous posts), the section from Buriton to South Harting (6.5km/4 miles one way from Halls Hill Car Park to Harting Down Car Park) is surprisingly hard going for off-road wheelchair users.

The path is mostly a wide dirt track but there are some steep stretches strewn with large stones (we did walk the day after several days of heavy downpours). Add to this a narrow country lane west of Sunwood Farm (apparently the border between Hampshire and West Sussex) with a surprising number of cars.  An off-road wheelchair/buggy is essential. Parking - Having parked in a cul-de-sac in Buriton and slogged up Kiln Lane, we realised Halls Hill Car Park GU31 5SH, is right on the South Downs Way.  Harting Down Car Park is on the South Down Way at the other end - Harting Down National Trust, South Downs West Estate Yard, Linch Road, Woolbeding, West Sussex, GU29 0QB. PayByPhone parking (£3 all day in September 2023).  There are no marked bays in either car park

Toilets - There are two portaloos in the Halls Hill Car Park.  There is a disabled toilet in The Nest Hotel. The nearest Changing Places toilets are Staunton Country Park, Middle Park Way, Havant PO9 5HB (9.7 miles) and CafĂ© Hogmoor, Hogmoor Inclosure, Hogmoor Road, Whitehill, Bordon GU35 9HN (12.5 miles).

Refreshments - The Nest Hotel, 1 Petersfield Rd, Buriton, Petersfield GU31 5SW. The Five Bells, High Street, Buriton, Petersfield GU31 5RX. The White Hart, The Street, South Harting, Petersfield GU31 5QB, and Harting Stores & Post Office, 5 North Lane, South Harting, Petersfield GU31 5PY
