The 3.75km/2.3 miles (one way - 4.3km/2.6 miles one way to Beacon Hill trig point) stretch of The South Downs Way from The Milburys pub to Beacon Hill Car Park is perfectly accessible to an off road buggy/wheelchair.
The path is a dirt farm track apart from a 300m section of a wide road with good disability just before Beacon Hill Car Park, and another 300m stretch from The Milburys to when The South Downs Way becomes a narrow dirt track alongside the road before crossing at Wind Farm (the pedestrian gate is wedged close, but not locked!) and following the farm track . The first section of this dirt track was quite overgrown, and it may be preferable to walk along the road. NB if walking from The Milburys to Beacon Hill, DO NOT take the permissive bridleway instead of going through the gate and walking along the road for the final stretch to Beacon Hill car park - you cannot get across from this path to the car park without jumping over a ditch! Open OS Maps in new window.
When walking on the road, walk on the right hand side so as to face oncoming traffic. When the road bends to the right ahead of you, cross to the left so you can see oncoming traffic better. I have taken to wearing bright colours, and putting a flashing bike light on my daughter’s off road buggy so we can be seen.
Parking - I parked at The Milburys (Beauworth, nr Cheriton SO24 0PB). The previous owner welcomed walkers, but sold the pub in Easter 2023. The pub was closed for renovation when I parked there in May 2023, re-opening under new ownership in December 2023.
There is also a car park at Beacon Hill Nature Reserve, Sailor's Lane, Exton SO32 3LG (suggested parking charges).
Toilets - No public toilets. The nearest Changing Places toilets at Winchester Science Centre, Telegraph Way, Winchester, SO21 1HZ or Tesco Winchester Extra, Easton Lane, Winchester SO23 7RS.
Refreshments - The Milburys, Beauworth, nr Cheriton SO24 0PB
