Winchester - Chilcomb, South Downs Way, Hampshire

I revisited the start (or end) of the South Downs Way from Winchester to Chilcomb (walked from Chilcomb back to the M3) last week to check out wheelchair accessibility.

The walkers route is 3.7km one way from Durngate car park to Chilcomb
, but there is a shallow flight of steps at the end of this route as you come into Chilcomb (see photo). An all terrain buggy/wheelchair is required.

Access to walkers route

The cyclists route splits off after crossing the footbridge over the M3, and is 4.5km.  There is a newly built cycle path alongside the A31/St Catherine’s Way north up to the roundabout, and then east alongside the A31/Petersfield Road to the Chilcomb turn off.  The road down into Chilcomb is single lane, with poor visibility in places.  But this route is accessible in a ‘standard’ NHS wheelchair.

Steps at end of walkers section

The walkers route is the more scenic of the two options, and personally I would rather bump my daughter down the 3 steps at Chilcomb than walk down the narrow lane.

Cyclists route

For either route, starting from Durngate Car Park turn left out of the car park and cross Easton Lane behind The Willow Tree pub and walk down Durngate Terrace. Cross the River Itchen on either footbridge and follow Water Lane all the way to Bridge Street.  Cross the road and take the footpath alongside the River Itchen by The Bishop on The Bridge all the way to Wharf Mill, then turn east crossing Bar End Road, up East Hill, and along Petersfield Road to the South Downs Way trailhead just before the M3 footbridge.  The route splits into walker & cyclist routes just after this bridge.

From Chilcomb, the South Downs Way is off road but accessible all the way to Beacon Hill
